Coached

Otherwise known as the first day of the rest of my life. I doubled today, for the first time since one summer day with Charlie at the beach, and the second time since last March (probably.)

Run #1 was 6 miles with Bob this morning at 4:45. It was twice as warm as it was yesterday, but I still wore pants. I told him about my new arrangement with Greg, and we talked about various other things. Largely uneventful. We had to "surge" a little to get through the intersection of Caroline and Lafayette because of oncoming traffic, and Bob confessed that it was the most turnover he'd had in months. The low point of the run was at the end when I got home and my left ankle was cut from the zipper on my pants. Ouch! Bob asked to slow down around Canal Street, and I did so that he'd continue. Except I didn't really reduce my velocity; just my acceleration. We maintained the same pace for the rest of the run until the last mile.

Run #2 was immediately after school. 4 miles down Rt. 1, through the service road of Alum Springs, and around whatever business is at the end of that road behind the Armory. There was zero breeze and it felt as though I were just moving through the air effortlessly on the way out (downhill.) Then in Alum Springs I almost wiped out in some mud. I thought I was going to be a goner for the second time today (once at recess the same thing happened as I was walking.) I turned around a bit past 2 miles so I wouldn't have to run behind the building. I broke a sweat running back up Rt. 1. I was surprised to see the U-shaped pace from the 4 miles. 6:48, 7:02, 7:12, 6:45. (Those times are approximate.) I guess I pushed it up the hill a little harder than I thought. Also the middle two miles were in the woods for a bit-- unreliable signal.

I stretched well after both runs and hopefully I won't be too tired tomorrow morning. 8 runs in a row now equals my streak of 8 days in a row from October 21-28, 2010.
