Toast

I did my second workout today. Last week I only ran 26 miles, but 10 of those were in one workout. This week will likely be more of the same. I don't know if I'll try to do Friday's workout or not. I've got to be cautious. I've never tried doing workouts without having a lot of mileage under my legs first. But I'm getting bored with this slow running and days off all the time. I was thinking about it on my way home this morning... I'm used to having tons of people to do a long run with and no one to do a workout with. It's the exact opposite here. There is a group of people who show up every Tuesday and Friday to do the workout, but if I want company for a long run, I get more emails from Fredericksburg residents than I do Charlottesville residents. So here I am, doing workouts without long runs... hope it works!

The workout was a fartlek, 3 sets of 1 minute on, 30 seconds off, 1 minute on, 30 seconds off, 3 minutes on, 1 minute off, 3 minutes on, 1 minute off. We did it on the carpet and I stuck with Charlie and Seth for almost the first minute and most of the second minute, but I didn't even bother for the rest. I wanted to be especially cautious on the minutes, since they're supposed to be faster. You know you're out of shape when you're running marathon pace for 3 minutes at a time and it's hard! But I was still pretty surprised to look at my watch and see 5:28 pace happening.

Afterwards, I was pretty tired. But my last 3 minute interval (5:18 pace) was almost the same pace as my last 1 minute interval (5:17 pace) , because I was trying not to get lapped by Seth. Now my legs are toast. And my achilles are pretty sore too.

Onwards and upwards.
